The Shield House Inn - History and Elegance
The Shield House Inn, circa 1916, is listed on the
Historic registry as the Robert Herring House. The home was built as the
private residence. Mr. Herring's daughter, Maryanna, married James
Shields and inherited the house. Twin sisters Anita Green and Juanita
McLamb converted the house to a bed and breakfast in 1986, naming it The
Shield House Inn. In January of 2000 the Inn was purchased by current
owner LeAnn Yancey. Later that year LeAnn wed Scott Mizeski and they now
share innkeeper duties. The Inn is home to business travelers as well as
friends and family of local residents in Clinton for special
events...some of which are held right on the premises! Guests can enjoy
a short walk downtown for browsing gift shops, jewelry and clothing
stores, antique shops, and sample the offerings of locally-owned
sandwich cafes.
The home is situated on 1.5 acres in Clinton, NC - the
County Seat for Sampson County. It is located about one hour southeast
of Raleigh-Durham Airport and northwest of the Wilmington beaches. The
Fort Bragg/Fayetteville area is approximately 50 minutes to the west.
While continuing as a long-established farming community, the 10,000 +
citizens now find employment in a wide range of industries.
The Classic Revival style home features
leaded glass windows, soaring Corinthian columns, wrap-around porch,
upstairs balcony and Victorian street lights. Once inside, guests will
find 2 front parlors, a library/den, and a formal dining room off the
elegant double foyer. The dining room features a coffer ceiling and
crystal chandeliers. The grand central staircase leads to the upstairs
lounge and three guestrooms. Antiques fill the house, complimenting the
original moldings, wainscoting and interior columns. The hardwood
floors in the public rooms are pine with decorative mahogany inlays.
